Secondly, you could pay someone geekier then yourself to do the grunt work for you.
Choosing a web designer can be a bit of a challenge, especially if you don't know what questions to ask. Here are a few bulleted items to be aware of:

Each web designer will have some sort of pricing schematic. While there will be some who are out to rob you, web designers generally compete around the same dollar depending on what services they can offer. If you only need a basic page you can save some money by going with someone who isn't a master of Flash or PHP, as they'll generally charge less. - Features:
Much like cost can vary, features do as well. Think about whether or not you'll need a database for your site. Perhaps you'll need to add to your site every month, does your web designer have a solution for that? Web designers can plan for expandability and may be able to grow your site as your needs grow. If you only need the most basic of sites, you should find a cheaper web designer that can still suit all your needs. - Support:
What if something on your site is obsolete? What if your phone number changes or you decide to offer a new product? Who do you call and what is the arrangement to get the site updated? Will it be an additional charge? What is the turnaround time?
Before you make a deal with a web designer make sure all of the above is worked out ahead of time. After that you can sit back and relax as a qualified nerd makes your space on the web a happy productive one.
